Sixth Grade Center celebrates new ROMS Hawks at first-ever ‘Talon Camp’
Sixth graders get first look at “Energy Bus,” middle school student life
August 15, 2018
The first day of school is still days away, but the ROMS Sixth Grade Center was packed with nearly 200 of the newest kids on the block Tuesday night.
Complete with smiles and pom poms, ROMS cheerleaders welcomed the incoming sixth graders and their parents for an evening of getting acquainted with middle school life. As students visited various “bus stops,” veteran ROMS students took their new schoolmates on tours of the school. This is the first sixth grade camp ROMS has hosted, and it is already being celebrated as a huge success.
“To say the camp was successful would be putting it mildly,” said ROMS Principal Howard Gatewood. “It exceeded all expectations!”
Special thanks to Mr. Gatewood for contributing images and data for this story.

I think that this event was a really good idea. It’s hard for the new 6th graders to get used to a new environment. It’s nice to have older kids that already have been through the change there to help them and be someone they can relate with. Also the story was written really good!
