Earth’s Demise Through Global Warming
January 17, 2017
Global warming is a term people use to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans,a change that is believed to be permanently changing the Earth’s climate. This change is happening mostly because of the greenhouse effect that is caused by increased levels of CO2,chlorofluorocarbons,and other pollutants. NASA states that the Earth’s CO2 level has increased 404.93 parts per year.Global warming is increasingly damaging the world that humans live in year by year, something must be done.
Glaciers are majestic and wonderful things that can catch the eye. But,what most people don’t know is that they are shrinking.Ice covers 10 percent of Earth’s surface, and it is disappearing rapidly. These “sculptures” that took centuries to develop are crashing down in just a few years.
The widespread loss of these glaciers are altering climate patterns. Glaciers have white surfaces that can reflect the sun’s rays, and this helps keep Earth’s current climate mild. When these glacier’s melt,it exposes darker surfaces which absorbs heat and raises temperature even more.
Earth’s average temperature has risen 1.7°F over the past century. It is also projected to rise another .5-8.6°F over the next hundred years. Even small changes in the average temperature of the planet can translate to large and dangerous shifts in the climate and/or weather. Many places have seen changes in rainfall, that’s resulting in more floods and intense rain. Also, droughts and more frequent and severe heat waves.
The Great Barrier Reef is a beautiful place,or so people should say that it was. It used to be a colorful assortment of colors such as oranges, blues, pinks reds, purples, and many other colors. Now,these beautiful colors have turned to a disgusting display of greys and whites.Scientists have said that this as happened because of a mass bleaching event that was fueled by warmer oceans. This has happened because of climate change. Bleaching causes the coral to expel their algae to be left bare and without algae, coral cannot get the nutrients it needs. Now,because of this, the Great Barrier Reef will soon die for forever.
Many people think that because they’d are so large, they will take a long time to melt. However, that is not the case. They don’t melt slowly and steadily, like an ice cube on a table. When the glacial ice begins to break down, the interaction of meltwater with the glacier’s structure can cause increasingly fast melting and retreat. The arctic ice minimum, according to NASA,is going down 13.3 percent per decade. Additionally, that land ice is going down 281 gigatonnes each year. Many people think that because they’d are so large, they will take a long time to melt. However, that is not the case. Global warming is changing and destroying Earth in so many ways. Some are fast and some of them are slow. We might not notice them, but they are happening. Now,we might not know exactly what will happen in the future, but with the direction we’re headed, that’s probably not good.
