Musicals are always fun to watch, and have catchy songs that will be stuck in your head for days. These movies always make you want to jump up and dance or sing along with them. There are tons of movies based around music to watch, but here are five that stick out to me.

1. Footloose

“Footloose” is an oldie but a goodie. It tells the story of a religious town that is stuck in its ways with no music or dancing thanks to the Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow). But when his daughter, Ariel (Lori Singer), goes against everything he has been preaching with the new boy in town, Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon), the town starts to change.

This movie is definitely fun to watch. Kevin Bacon plays the role of Ren perfectly, and the story keeps you wondering if they really can break the old traditional rules.

2. The Little Mermaid

In Disney’s animated take on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, a young mermaid named Ariel (Jodi Benson) is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, she falls hopelessly in love with the human prince Eric. But just hoping for a pair of legs won’t help her get to her one true love. Determined to be with Eric, she makes a risky deal with the sea witch Ursula (Pat Carroll), giving Ursula her voice in exchange for having legs for three days. But when the deal goes all wrong, King Triton is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.

“The Little Mermaid” seems different than all the other princess movies. Ariel makes a lot of sacrifices for the boy she loves, and you don’t see much of that in other Disney fairy tale movies, which normally focus on the main male character saving the day.

3. Grease

When exchange student Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) and greaser Danny Zuko (John Travolta) have a summer romance, they think that a summer fling is all it would ever be. But when a new girl arrives at Rydell High School, Danny never thought it would be the girl he spent his summer days with. The classy new girl and popular bad boy go through romances and adventures, singing songs about their feelings, and in the end, having more than just a summer love.

4. Pitch Perfect

College student Beca (Anna Kendrick) knows she does not want to be part of a clique when she arrives at college, but that’s exactly where she finds herself.  Thrown into the Barden Bellas singing group, she learns that it’s not as bad to be in a clique as she thought. Pulling through the hard work, embarrassment and haters, the Bellas get what they have always wanted.

“Pitch Perfect” is definitely a funny and entertaining movie to watch, and I am for sure going to see the sequel. I love Rebel Wilson’s role; she makes everything funny and entertaining.

5. Mary Poppins

When Jane and Michael Banks (Karen Dotrice, Matthew Garber) get a new nanny, they realize this isn’t your ordinary nanny. Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) and her confident performer friend, Bert (Dick Van Dyke) take the children on magical adventures with dancing penguins, horseback riding and funny songs. This leads Jane and Michael to try to pass on some of their nanny’s sunny attitude to their preoccupied parents (David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns) who are strictly business.

Van Dyke’s energy is prodigious, especially when he leaps around with a gang of chimney-sweepers on the rooftops, and the songs are classics.
